Check and replace
Work on the 12-volt battery can cause severe
burns, explosions and electrical discharges.
Always wear eye protection and protective
gloves.
Battery electrolyte is very aggressive. It can
cause skin burns and blindness. When handling
the 12-volt battery, protect yourself only from
the

Never tip over the 12-volt battery. The
degassing holes could leak electrolyte and
cause burns.
Never open the 12-volt battery.
If electrolyte is splashed on the skin or in the
eyes, immediately flush the affected area
with plenty of cold water for several minutes.
Then consult a doctor immediately.
If electrolyte is ingested, seek immediate medical
attention.

Opening the 12-volt battery cover
If the battery has a cover:
To open the cover, lift it in the direction of the arrow
fig. 178.
To close the cover, lower it in the opposite direction
to the arrow → fig. 178.
Check the battery electrolyte level (
12-volt batteries
with sight glass).
Make sure you have good lighting so that you can
clearly see the colour indicator in the round
inspection window on the top of the battery.

Light yellow or colourless The battery electrolyte
level is too low. Have the battery checked
and, if necessary, replaced by a specialist
workshop.
Black Battery electrolyte level is correct.

If you suspect that the 12-volt battery is damaged
or defective, have it replaced by a qualified
specialist workshop.
Charging the 12-volt battery
To charge the 12-volt battery, please contact a
specialist workshop, as the battery type supplied
with the vehicle from the factory uses a technology
that requires a limited charging voltage → .
Volkswagen recommends that this be done by a
Volkswagen dealer.
Replace the 12-volt battery
The 12-volt battery is designed for its location and
is equipped with safety features. If the battery
needs to be replaced, ask your Volkswa- gen
dealer about electromagnetic compatibility, size
and the necessary maintenance, performance and
safety requirements before purchasing a new
battery. The venting hole of the 12-volt battery
must always be on the negative pole side. The
venting hole on the positive pole side must always
be closed.
Use only 12-volt, maintenance-free batteries that
meet TL 825 06 standards.
and VW 7 50 73. These standards must be dated
October 2014 or later.
Always have the 12-volt battery replaced by a
qualified specialist workshop, as it is not possible
to replace a 12-volt battery.
The vehicle's electrical system must be adapted
when replacing it. Only highly qualified specialist
workshops have the appropriate technology to
carry out the adaptation correctly. Volkswagen
recommends having the battery replaced by a
Volkswagen dealer.
Disconnecting the 12-volt battery
If the 12-volt battery is to be disconnected from
the vehicle's electrical system, please note the
following:
Switch off all electrical consumers and the
ignition.
Before disconnecting the battery, unlock the
vehicle, otherwise the alarm will be triggered.
Disconnect the negative cable first, then the
positive cable → .
