When in exceptional cases you have to change the
engine oil yourself, please note the following:
•
Always wear eye protection.
•
To avoid burns, always wait for the engine to
cool down completely.
•
Keep the arms in a horizontal position when
unscrewing the oil drain screw by hand so
that the oil does not run out.
can descend through them.
•
To collect used oil, use a suitable container
with at least the same capacity as the engine.
•
Never store engine oil in empty food cans,
bottles or other empty containers, as other
people may confuse it.
•
Engine oil is toxic and must be kept out of
the reach of children.
This is normal and is not a reason to change the

Engine oil consumption
Note and , on page 240, and
, at the
beginning of this chapter, on page 244.
Engine oil consumption may vary from engine to
engine and over the life of the engine.
Oil consumption can be up to 1 litre (1 quart) every
2000 km (1200 mi) depending on the driving style
and conditions under which the vehicle is used. In
the case of new vehicles, during the first 5000 km
(3100 mi) the consumption may be even higher. For
this reason, the oil level should be checked
regularly, preferably when refuelling and before
undertaking long journeys.
If the engine is subjected to high stresses (e.g.
when driving on long motorways in summer or
through high mountain passes), the engine level will
be reduced.
