Introduction to the topic
Engine coolant is toxic!
•
Store the coolant only in the original
container, tightly closed and in a safe place.
•
Never store the coolant in empty food cans,
bottles or other empty containers, as it may be
swallowed.
•
Keep engine coolant out of the reach of
children.
•
Make sure that the percentage of coolant
additive is correct taking into account the
lowest ambient temperature pre-heating.
The vehicle shall not be used in the place where
the vehicle is to be used.
•
When the outside temperature is extremely
low, the coolant may freeze and the vehicle
may become immobilised.
The heating would not work either, so
insufficiently warm occupants could freeze to
death. As the heating would not work in this
case either, insufficiently warm occupants could
freeze to death.

Engine oil pressure too low
The control lamp flashes red.
Do not continue the march!
Engine oil pressure is too low.
—
Switch off the engine.
—
Check engine oil level
→ p. 246.
If the warning lamp flashes even though the oil
level is correct, do not continue driving or leave the
engine running.
Failure to do so may result in damage to the
machine.
—
Seek the assistance of specialised personnel.
Engine oil level too low
The control lamp lights up yellow.
—
Stop the vehicle as soon as possible.
—
Switch off the engine.
—
Check engine oil level
→ p. 246.
Fault in the engine oil system
The indicator light flashes yellow.
There is a fault in the engine oil system.
—
Have your vehicle serviced by a specialist
workshop.
—
Have the engine oil system checked.
Engine coolant
Only carry out work on the engine cooling system
yourself if you are familiar with the necessary
procedures and generally applicable safety
precautions, and if you have the correct tools,
equipment and operating fluids at your disposal. If
work is carried out improperly, this can result in
serious injuries → p. 248. If necessary, have all
work carried out by a specialist workshop.
Volkswagen recommends that this be done by a
Volkswagen dealer.

If there are any operating fluids in the system,
collect them and dispose of them properly and in an
environmentally friendly manner.

, at the
beginning of this chapter, on page 248.
The engine cooling system is fitted ex factory with a
mixture of specially treated water and at least 40
% coolant additive.
Find out which coolant is suitable for your vehicle
from a specialist workshop. Volkswagen
recommends that you visit a Volkswagen dealer for
this.
In order to protect the engine cooling system, the
additive percentage should always be at least 40 %.
If greater anti-freeze protection is required for
climatic reasons, the additive proportion may be
increased. However, only up to a maximum of 55
%, otherwise the anti-freeze protection would be
reduced and the cooling effect would be impaired.
