Volkswagen vehicles are equipped with one of the
following front passenger airbag systems.
Depending on the equipment, an airbag system or
an airbag system with deactivation of the front
passenger airbag can be fitted .
Airbag system
The front passenger frontal airbag may only be
deactivated by a specialist workshop.
Characteristics of the airbag system:
— Front passenger airbag in the instrument panel
— Yellow indicator light on the instrument
panel display
Airbag system with deactivation of the front
passenger frontal airbag
The front passenger frontal airbag can be
deactivated manually with a key switch.

Characteristics of the airbag system with
deactivation of the front passenger airbag:
— Front passenger airbag in the instrument panel
— Yellow control lamp on the instrument
panel display
— Yellow PASSEN- GER AIR BAG indicator
light in the centre console
— Yellow PASSEN- GER AIR BAG indicator
light in the centre console
— Key switch on the passenger side, on the side of
the instrument panel (only visible with the door
open).

When the ignition is switched on, the yellow
indicator light in the instrument cluster
display comes on briefly as a function check
and goes out after a few seconds.
The front passenger frontal airbag is
deactivated. The front passenger frontal
airbag is deactivated.
The centre console ring lights up and remains
lit → fig. 34.
The front passenger frontal airbag is
activated. The yellow indicator light
The centre console switch in the centre
console switches off automatically after
approx. 60 seconds after the ignition has
been switched on or the front passenger
airbag has been activated with the key
switch.

If the yellow PASSEN- GER AIR BAG indicator light
in the centre console does not remain lit
when the front passenger frontal airbag is
deactivated, the airbag is not activated.
If the warning lightis on or comes on together with
the yellowwarning light on the instrument
panel display,there may be a malfunction in the
airbag system → .
