Fuel and exhaust gas cleaning
Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, which
can cause loss of consciousness and death.
•
Do not run the engine in enclosed spaces.
•
Never run the engine in enclosed spaces.
•
Do not leave the vehicle with the engine
running unattended.
The components of the exhaust system become
extremely hot and this can cause fires.
•
Park the vehicle so that no components of the
exhaust system come into contact with easily
flammable materials.
that may be found under the vehicle, such as
dry grass.
•
Never use additional underbody protection or
anti-corrosion products for exhaust pipes,
catalytic converters or catalytic converters,
the particulate filter or thermal insulators.
Unexpected manoeuvres for other road users
can lead to accidents.
•
Always adapt your speed and driving style to
the visibility, weather, road and traffic
conditions.
•
Observe the legal provisions of the country
in question when driving.
Introduction to the topic
Exhaust gas cleaning
The exhaust gas relevant components reduce
pollutant emissions:
—
Catalyst → p. 224
—
Particulate filter (depending on equipment)
→ p. 224
If the engine does not turn over properly, reduce
speed immediately, visit a specialist workshop and
have the vehicle checked → p. 225. In such cases,
unburned fuel residue can get into the exhaust
system and thus into the atmosphere. The
catalytic converter could also be damaged by
overheating.
Even if the exhaust gas cleaning system
works perfectly, the exhaust gases may still have
a sulphur-like odour.
Particulate filter
Note and , on page 221, and
, at the
beginning of this chapter, on page 224.
Function
The particulate filter (depending on equipment)
filters soot from the exhaust gases.
Regeneration
During normal operation, the filter is cleaned
automatically. If automatic filter cleaning is not
possible (e.g. if short journeys are constantly being
made), the filter becomes saturated with soot. The
particulate filter needs to be cleaned
(regeneration).
During regeneration, noises, a slight odour and an
increase in engine speed may occur. The radiator
fan may after-run both while the engine is running
and after it has been switched off.
In order to help regenerate the particulate filter,
Volkswagen recommends that short journeys
should not be made continuously.
Catalyst
Note and , on page 221, and
, at the
beginning of this chapter, on page 224.
For a long service life of the exhaust system and the
catalytic converter of the petrol engine:
—
Refuel only with unleaded petrol.
—
Never fill the fuel tank completely → page
223.
—
Do not overfill the engine oil → page 246.
—
Do not start by towing; use the starting aid
instead → p. 235.
If, while driving, there are faults in the drive system,
there is a loss of power or a loss of control.
The soot retained in the particulate filter is
periodically burned at a high temperature.
During a periodic regeneration the yellow control
lamp does not light up.
