Check and replace
NOTICE
na marked. This is normal. The coolant must not be
sucked out.
— When the engine is cold, check the coolant
level at the side marks on the expansion tank
→ Fig. 175. The coolant level must be between
the marks.
— If the level is below the minimum ("min") mark
on the reservoir, add coolant. When the engine
is warm, the coolant level may slightly exceed
the upper mark.
Replenish engine coolant
If the engine coolant level is too low, the coolant
warning light comes on. In this case, call in a
qualified technician immediately.
If the coolant level is too low and there is no
workshop nearby, please note the following:
— Always protect your face, hands and arms from
hot coolant or steam by placing a suitable cloth
over the cap of the engine coolant expansion
tank.
— Carefully unscrew the cover → p. 250.
— Only add new coolant according to Volkswagen
specifications.

— Only add coolant if there is still some coolant in
the expansion tank, otherwise the engine could
be damaged! If you do not see any coolant in
the expansion tank, do not continue to drive and
call a qualified person for assistance.
— If there is still some coolant left in the expansion
tank, add coolant up to the top mark on the
tank and check the level the next day. If the
level drops again, visit a workshop and have
the cooling system checked.
— The coolant level must be between the marks
on the expansion tank.
→ Never go beyond the upper edge of the
marked area → p. 250.
— Screw the lid on tightly.
— If you do not have engine coolant with the
prescribed specifications available in an
emergency, do not use any other coolant
additive → page 248! In this case, add only
distilled water → p. 250. Then have the
prescribed additive added in the correct ratio as
soon as possible.

Use only distilled water! Other types of water
contain chemicals that can cause considerable
damage to the water supply.
This could also lead to engine failure. This could
also lead to engine failure. If non-distilled water
has been added, have the entire engine cooling
system fluid changed immediately by a specialist
workshop.

When adding engine coolant, do not go beyond
the upper edge of the marked area → Fig. 175.
Excess liquid will be expelled from the engine
cooling system and could cause damage.

If the system leaks a lot of coolant, replenish the
coolant only after the engine has cooled down

leaks in the engine cooling system. Immediately
go to a specialist workshop and have the system
checked, otherwise the engine could be
damaged!
Hot engine vapour and coolant can cause
severe burns.
•
Never open the front bonnet if you see or hear
vapour or coolant escaping from the front
compartment. Always wait until you can no
longer see or hear
steam or coolant escaping. Touching hot parts
can cause severe skin burns.
•
Before opening the front bonnet, please note
the following:
— Engage the electric parking brake.
— Always keep children away from the front
compartment and never leave them
unattended.
•
When the engine is hot, its cooling system is
under pressure. Never open the cap of the
fuel expansion tank.
The engine coolant must be drained from the
engine when the engine is hot. Failure to do so
could cause coolant to splash out and result in
severe burns and other injuries.
— Turn the cover slowly and carefully
anticlockwise and at the same time exert a
light pressure on the cover.
— Always protect your face, hands and arms
from the coolant or steam when using the
refrigerant.
The use of a large, coarse cloth is
recommended.
