Security
Never adjust the height of the seat belt while
driving.
WARNING
Automatic rewinder,
pretensioner and belt force
limiter
Improper handling and improper repairs to seat-
belts and automatic seat-belt and seat-belt
pretensioners can increase the risk of serious or
fatal injury. Pretensioners may not activate, even
though they should, or may do so unexpectedly.
Never repair, adjust, dismantle or fit seatbelt
components and belt pretensioners. Always
order these
work to a specialised workshop → p. 293.
Seatbelts and seatbelt pretensioners and
automatic seatbelt retractors cannot be
repaired and must be replaced.
WARNING
pass over the centre of the shoulder p. 42,
Positioning the belt strap.
Release the forwarding device.
Make sure that the retracting device is locked
in place by pulling on the seat belt.
Belt force limiter
In the event of an accident, the safety belt force
limiter reduces the force exerted by the safety belt
on the body.
If the vehicle or parts of the system are to
be scrapped, it shall be repaired or replaced.
The relevant safety regulations must be observed.
Specialised workshops are familiar with these
regulations → p. 44.
Please note at the beginning of this chapter
on
page 37.
Vehicle seat belts are part of the vehicle safety
system.
→ This system has the following important
functions:
Automatic belt winder
All safety belts have an automatic rewinder in the
shoulder belt part. This device ensures full freedom
of movement if the shoulder belt is pulled slowly.
or during normal driving. However, the roll-up locks
the seat belt if it is pulled out quickly, when
braking, on hilly sections, when cornering and
when accelerating.
Belt pretensioner
The seat belts in the front seats and, where
appropriate, in the second row rear side seats are
fitted with pretensioners.
The pretensioners are activated by sensors in the
event of severe frontal, side and rear collisions and
vehicle rollover, and tighten the seat belts in the
opposite direction to their exit. If the seatbelt is
slack, the pretensioner tightens it. This can
dampen the movement of the occupants forward
and in the direction of impact. The belt
pretensioners work in conjunction with the airbag
system. In the event of a rollover, the
pretensioners are not activated unless the side
airbags are triggered.
When activated, a fine dust may be released. This is
completely normal and does not mean that a fire
has broken out in the vehicle.
Please note at the beginning of this chapter on
page 37.
When work is carried out on the belt pretensioners
or when other vehicle parts are removed and fitted
for other repair work, the safety belts may be
damaged without being noticed. This can result in
the pretensioners not functioning properly or not
functioning at all in the event of an accident.
To ensure that the effectiveness of the belt
tensioners is not impaired and that the dismantled
components do not cause injury or contaminate
the environment, the relevant regulations must be
observed. Specialised workshops are familiar with
these regulations.
Airbag modules and belt pretensioners may
contain perchlorate. Please note
The legal provisions relating to the right to a hearing
must be taken into account.
