Description
The vehicle is equipped with a
DSG®
dual clutch
gearbox.
The
DSG®
dual clutch gearbox is a gearbox
with
dual clutch technology that shifts
gears
automatically. A dual clutch
and two mutually independent part-shift
transmissions make it possible to change gear very
quickly without any loss of tractive power. The
DSG®
dual-clutch transmission thus combines the power
and economy of a manual transmission with the
comfort and convenience of a conventional
automatic transmission.
Operation
When driving, the engine power is transmitted to
the drive shaft via the gearbox. To change gear,
the transmission of power between the engine and
the gearbox must be interrupted. This is the
function of the clutch.
In the case of the
DSG®
dual clutch transmission, the
engine power is always transmitted without
interruption via one of the two part-shift
transmissions during gear changes. Before a gear
change, the next gear up or down is preselected in
the transmission that is not active. The clutch of the
preselected gear is then closed and the clutch of
the previously selected gear is opened at the same
time. This allows very fast gear changes.
Thanks to its design, the
DSG®
dual clutch
transmission is more efficient than an automatic
transmission. While the torque converter of an
automatic transmission is always in operation, the
DSG®
dual clutch transmission can open the clutch
and shift the transmission to the neutral position.
at idling speed and thus save fuel. Due to its
efficiency, low weight and intelligent management,
the
DSG®
dual clutch gearbox generally achieves the
same or lower fuel consumption than a manual
gearbox.
As with manual transmissions, the clutch of the
DSG®
dual clutch transmission is also subject to
wear. Depending on the type of
DSG®
dual clutch
transmission, regular maintenance may be
necessary. For more information on this → page
286. If one of the part-drives fails, the
DSG®
dual
clutch transmission also offers the option of
disengaging one of the part-drives and continuing
to drive with the other part-drive → page 129.

button (arrow).
When the ignition is switched on, the display of the
instrument cluster shows the selected position of the
selector lever.
- Parking lock
The drive wheels are locked. Select this position
only when the vehicle is stationary.
To remove the selector lever from this position,
depress the brake pedal with the ignition on and
press the lever lock button.
- Reverse gear
Reverse gear is engaged. Select this po- sition only
when the vehicle is stationary.
- Ne neutral
The gearbox is in the neutral position. No
movement is transmitted to the wheels and the
engine freewheeling effect is not available.
- Permanent position for forward
gear Ratio :
normal programme
All upshifts and downshifts are performed
automatically. The timing of the downshift depends
on the engine load, personal driving style and the
driving speed.
