to a higher gear and earlier to a lower gear than
when the selector lever is in position D. Shift
timing is a function of engine load, personal driving
style and driving speed.
To change between gear ratios D and S, push the
selector lever slightly backwards.
fig. 107.
The selector lever always returns to the D/S
position. This also works on the Tiptronic selection
track → page 126.
Selector lever lock
In the P and N positions, the locking of the readout
lever prevents the readout lever from being
inadvertently shifted out of position and thus
preventing the vehicle from moving unintentionally.
To release the selector lever lock, switch off the
ignition and depress the brake pedal. Then press
the locking button on the selector lever in the
direction of the arrow.
fig. 107.
If the N position is skipped, e.g. by shifting from
reverse gear to the D/S position, the lever does not
lock. This makes it possible, for example, to pull out
a stuck vehicle by "swinging" it. If the selector
lever remains in the N position for more than
approx. 1 second without the brake pedal being
depressed, the lever will not lock.
or driving at a speed of less than approx. 5 km/h (3
mph), the lever locks.
If, when the vehicle is stationary, the electronic
parking brake is not engaged and the brake pedal
is released with parking lock P engaged, the
vehicle may move a few centimetres forwards or
backwards.
If you accidentally shift to N while driving,
stop accelerating. Wait in neutral position
The engine must be allowed to idle before re-
engaging a gear ratio.
The 12-volt battery is discharged if, when the
engine is switched off, you do not have the
parking P engaged for a pro- longed time.

With the engine running and the selector
lever in the D/S or R position, it is necessary
to depress the accelerator pedal.
The brake pedal is used to hold the vehicle.
Even at idling speed, the transmission of power
is not completely interrupted and the vehicle
continues to coast slowly.
Never engage reverse gear R or the parking
lock P when the vehicle is in motion.
Never exit the vehicle with the gear lever in
the N position.
engine is running or switched off.
If the selector lever is moved to the wrong
position, loss of control of the vehicle could result
in an accident and serious injury.
Never accelerate when changing the position
of the selector lever.
With the engine running and a gear ratio
engaged, the vehicle will move as soon as the
brake pedal is released.
