Accessories, replacement of parts, repairs and modifications
Any repairs or modifications made to the vehicle in
an incorrect manner can cause damage and
malfunctions to the vehicle and impair the
effectiveness of the airbag system. This could
result in an accident and serious or fatal injury.
•
Repairs and modifications to the vehicle should
only be carried out by specialised workshops.
•
Airbag modules cannot be repaired and
must be replaced.
•
Never fit air bag parts removed from end-of-
life vehicles or from recycling plants to the
vehicle.
Repairs and possible
negative
effects
on the airbag system
Modifications to the vehicle suspension,
including the use of unauthorised tyre/tire
combinations, may alter the operation of the
airbags and increase the risk of serious injury.
or fatal in the event of an accident.
•
Never fit suspension components whose
characteristics are not identical to those of the
original parts fitted to the vehicle.
•
Never use tyre/tyre combinations which have
not been approved by Volks-
wagen.
Mobile telephony and
in-vehicle
radio
communication
The suspension modifications can be made to the
e.g. increase the forces measured by the sensors and
cause the airbag system to deploy in certain crashes
where it would not normally deploy if certain
modifications had not been made. Other
modifications may reduce the forces measured by
the sensors and prevent the airbags from deploying
when they should.
When carrying out repairs and technical
modifications, the
Volkswagen
guidelines
→
must be observed!
Only have modifications and repairs to the front
bumper, doors, front seats, roof lining or bodywork
carried out by a specialist workshop. Airbag system
components and sensors may be located in these
parts of the vehicle.
When work is carried out on the airbag system or
when parts of the airbag system are removed and
installed for other repair work, components of the
airbag system may be damaged. This can result in
the airbags not deploying correctly or not
deploying at all in the event of an accident.
To ensure that the efficiency of the air bags is not
impaired and that the dismantled components do
not cause injury or pollute the environment, the
relevant regulations must be observed. Specialised
workshops are familiar with these regulations.
Modifying the vehicle's suspension may impair the
function of the airbag system in the event of a
collision. For example, the use of tyre/rim
combinations not approved by Volkswagen,
lowering the vehicle height, modifying the stiffness
of the suspension, including springs, telescopic
arms, shock absorbers, etc., can change the forces
measured by the airbag sensors and transmitted to
the electronic control unit. Deter-
Electromagnetic
radiation
If a mobile phone or a radio is used without a
connection to the external antenna, the
electromagnetic radiation is not optimally directed
outwards. Particularly in the event of poor
reception, e.g. in rural areas, high levels of
radiation may be present in the vehicle. This can
pose a health risk → .
Depending on the equipment, a suitable telephone
interface can be used to connect the telephone to the
telephone.
•
Repairs and modifications to the vehicle should
only be carried out by specialised workshops.
They have
diagnostic equipment, repair information and
tools to be tested, as well as qualified
personnel.
•
Only fit parts to the vehicle which are
equivalent in construction and properties to the
parts fitted in the vehicle from
factory.
•
Never attach or place objects, such as a
telephone holder, in the airbag deployment
zones as this may cause injury.
serious or fatal if the airbags were to deploy.
•
Only fit the rim and tyre combinations
approved by Volkswagen for the
type of vehicle concerned.
